Using FileBrowse is so easy, it doesn’t need a manual. However, you might find the following hints and tips useful.

  • Click on the text area below an icon to open a file/application (black text) or show the contents of a folder (blue text). You don’t have to double-click; a single click will do. It’s like clicking on a link in a web browser.
  • Click on an icon/thumbnail to select it. Shift-click to select a range of items. Command-click to select/deselect multiple items individually. Once selected, you can drag and drop items into other applications.
  • Click on any white space in the window or press the Escape key to deselect.
  • Click on a group header to collapse the group. Click again to expand it.
  • Use the View menu to change grouping and sorting (within groups), or to select additional information to show for each item. The sorting values (if any) are shown above the item names. Selected additional info (if any) is shown below the item names.
  • The toolbar and previews have round buttons with large clickable areas. You don’t have to click exactly inside a button’s circle. When you move the mouse over a round button, its entire clickable area is highlighted, which is larger than its circle. So, for example, the Back button extends all the way from its circle to the left edge of the window, making it much easier and faster to click than a regular button.
  • Use the search box in the toolbar to find items (in the currently shown folder) by name. Type one or more (partial) words (separated by spaces). Entering with the Enter/Return key will select all found items at once.
  • When you type text in the search box, a button will appear to the right of it. Click it (or select Find Next from the Edit menu) to select a single found item at a time (instead of all found items at once). Click repeatedly to select the next found item, and so on. (The Find Previous command in the Edit menu will select the previous found item.)
  • In the Finder, you can drag an icon and drop it onto the FileBrowse application icon (or an alias thereof) or the FileBrowse icon in the dock. If you drag and drop a folder icon, its contents will be shown in FileBrowse. If you drag and drop a file icon, its enclosing folder will be shown in FileBrowse and the file will be selected.
  • In FileBrowse, press Command-Return to reveal the currently shown folder in the Finder. If items are selected in FileBrowse, they will then also be selected in the Finder. Use FileBrowse for browsing, organizing and viewing files/folders, then switch to the Finder to manage (rename, move, etc.) them.
